Super 8 – The Return To the Classic Romantic Thriller

I spent some time on this site talking about what we would stereotypically call “romance” stories but I would like to take a moment to switch gears and talk about Super 8. While Super 8 might not be the first film that comes to mind when we think of all the different facets of a romance it is, in fact, a romantic thriller. It is a story that follows the experiences of a group of children and, in many ways, it is a coming of age tale where our characters learn to laugh and love all set against a truly exciting story.

To describe Super 8 in a nutshell, a group of kids are shooting a movie they want to turn in to a film festival when a train carrying cargo that is property of the US Air Force crashes into a truck. The small, quiet town that this occurs in is instantly shook up by the event as something truly alien escapes from the cargo hold and runs amok. However, the story is less about an alien and more about a kid growing up and coping with both tragedy of loss and the joys of first love.

A classic feeling of child-like wonder is evoked, reminiscent of classics like E.T. and the romance that blooms between the main characters is something real and innocent. It’s something you can’t ignore and it’s all over the story screaming “I’M HERE” amidst the mystery and wonder of an unfolding, military conspiracy and the adventure of a lifetime.

During her short lifetime, Jane Austen published only six novels, two of these posthumously by her siblings, but she remains one of Read More »

Fangs and Fur: Werewolf Heroes in Romance

Like their cousins, the vampires, werewolves are becoming increasingly common in romantic fiction. When you think about it, it is easy to see why. Lycanthropes blur the line between man and nature—a person may have any sort of civilized human persona, but beneath that they have a secret side that is rough and passionate, enslaved by desires that they literally cannot control. Werewolves are particularly popular for male heroes for these reasons. Heroines may be cursed as well, though they almost always wind up with a fellow werewolf lover, their relationship almost Read More »

Hot Trends in Paranormal Romance Novels

The Paranormal romance genre is continuing to grow in both popularity and subject matter. The most common topic remains the vampire—a lover who is supernaturally attractive, powerful yet drawn to his (usually his) lover by an uncontrollable “hunger” of two different kinds. However, these same themes can be used in other topics. Some writers use fairies (or “faeries”), drawing on the original legends where the Fair Folk were seductive but unpredictable mates. Werewolves, probably the second most popular subject after vampires, put an emphasis on the concept of uncontrollable desire and rough passion. Read More »
