Jane Austen was born December 16, 1775, and at a time when the only thing expected of a woman was to make a good match and marry a good husband, she opted for a career instead. It is believed that in 1787, Jane Austen began to pen her first works at the young age of only twelve years old. She wrote poems and short stories that she placed in notebooks. During her short lifetime, Jane Austen published only six novels, two of these posthumously by her siblings, but she remains one of the most loved and read authors of today.Want more? Click here/tag All six of her works have been made into major motion pictures.

The 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility has two vastly different sisters looking for love. You have the sensible sister Marianne, played by Emma Thompson, who is reserved and afraid to show her feelings. In contrast, there is the romantic sister Elinor, played by Kate Winslet, who is wild and ready to find love at all cost. Hugh Grant also stars in this film. The film Mansfield Park, said to be Austen’s autobiographical novel, stars Embeth Davidtz and Jonny Lee Miller. Other films based on her novels include Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Her most popular novel Pride & Prejudice has been put to film many times. The most recent adaptation was made in 2005 and stars Keira Knightley, and Matthew Macfadyen.

Jane Austen died at the young age of 42, but she left us six timeless masterpieces that will no doubt continue to be loved, read , and put to film, for many years to come.

Like their cousins, the vampires, werewolves are becoming increasingly common in romantic fiction. When you think about it, it is easy to see why. Lycanthropes blur the line between man and nature—a person may have any sort of civilized human persona, but beneath that they have a secret side that is rough and passionate, enslaved by desires that they literally cannot control. Werewolves are particularly popular for male heroes for these reasons. Heroines may be cursed as well, though they almost always wind up with a fellow werewolf lover, their relationship almost inevitably built on irresistible attraction. Often thematic advantage is made of the fact that real wolves mate for life.

One common thread in fantastic romance is to involve a werewolf in a love triangle with a human girl and a vampire rival. This allows for contrasting archetypes: the werewolf is rough, wild and emotional, while the vampire is usually aristocratic, also passionate but in a much more subdued way. The Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer is one famous depiction of such a love triangle, though unfortunately for werewolf fans, the vampire wins in that and most cases. Perhaps this will change as werewolf romance continues growing in popularity.

The Paranormal romance genre is continuing to grow in both popularity and subject matter. The most common topic remains the vampire—a lover who is supernaturally attractive, powerful yet drawn to his (usually his) lover by an uncontrollable “hunger” of two different kinds. However, these same themes can be used in other topics. Some writers use fairies (or “faeries”), drawing on the original legends where the Fair Folk were seductive but unpredictable mates. Werewolves, probably the second most popular subject after vampires, put an emphasis on the concept of uncontrollable desire and rough passion. Witches are another common subject, in this case because it allows the woman herself to be the supernatural, powerful partner in the relationship. Ghost romance allows for themes of eternal love, or if nothing else adds and air of mystery and longing that the two cannot easily be together. Romance involving time travel offers a sort of nostalgia, where a woman of the modern age can imagine a literal white knight sweeping her off of her feet.

Sci-fi romance, such as between a human and an alien, is also growing. However, since extraterrestrials are usually seen as un-humanoid, shapeshifting is usually involved. After all, there’s too paranormal.

Historical romances are rich with history while providing some of the deepest love stories of all times. The following are five must-read books from the historical romance genre. One of the best historical romance novels ever written is by author Julie Garwood. “The Wedding” is a tale of bravery and courage that leads one burly warrior and one innocent young lady into each other’s arms.

Johanna Lindsey has a very popular series of historical romances about the Mallory family. Each regency romance is filled with humor, love and historically accurate backgrounds. “Tender Rebel” is one of the best out of the series.

Hannah Howell is another author who has managed to capture the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Her book, “Highland Honor,” is filled with intrigue as a man fights to free the woman he has fallen in love with.

“Spell of the Highlander” by Karen Marie Moning is a passionate book about one woman giving the ultimate sacrifice to free the man she loves from an evil spell. This story has a bit of the paranormal mixed in.

“Rushed to the Altar” by Jane Feather is a heartwarming story that reinforces the bond between siblings and the power of a man and woman in love.
